Things all bloggers should do

Things all bloggers should do

When it comes to blogging, there is no right and wrong way of doing it. We are all individuals, and as such, our blogs should reflect that. However there are certain things that all bloggers should do. So today I thought I would share some things that everybody should try and do. Just remember to take this post as a guide: while I’m saying you should try and do it, that doesn’t mean your blog won’t succeed without it.

Create an ‘About Me’ page

When I find a new blog that I like, I always try and get to know the blogger better. So the first thing that I do is look at their ‘about me’ page. The page doesn’t have to be very long, just a few paragraphs about yourself, and who you are. Maybe a picture or two if you feel confident enough sharing your picture.

Create a ‘Disclaimer/Contact Me’ page

If you plan on working with brands and PR’s then you really should have a contact me/disclaimer page. Include your email address so that people can contact you. Then make sure to have a paragraph outlining how you plan on declaring sponsored/gifted content.

Declare content

This is a follow on from the last point, but it is so important to declare any sponsored or gifted content. Some people like to do this is in different ways, but as a general guide: Put a ‘*’ after any gifted content in posts. Some people only declare in the very first post they feature the product in, but personally I like to declare it in every post I feature the item. Then, post an actual declaration either at the beginning, or the end of the post. Similarly with sponsored content: put a declaration at the end of the post. These declarations are so important- it is actually illegal not to declare, and not only that, but you are actually misleading your readers if you don’t.

Link to your social media accounts

Almost all bloggers have some form of social media accounts to go alongside their blogs. So make sure to link these accounts on your blog! I have all of mine linked at the top of my blog, and on the bottom of each post, so it shouldn’t be too difficult for anybody to find them.

Create a media kit

This is another important thing to have if you plan on working with PR’s or brands. It’s actually took me three years to make mine, and I really wish I had made it sooner. Basically, a media kit is like a CV for your blog. It tells prospective clients what your blog is about, its achievements, and how well it is doing! You can then send this off to brands if they approach you about collaborations. I’m planning on doing a post about how I made mine in the future, but for now I’ll link the three posts I used when making my own:

Rhianna Olivia: What to include in a blog media kit

Beauty and the Chic: My media kit for Beauty and the Chic

When Tania Talks: How to create and media kit

Make your blog easily searchable

It’s so important to make sure that your blog is easily searchable. There’s nothing I hate more than going onto a blog, and not being able to search through older posts with ease. There’s a few ways you can make sure your blog is easily searchable: include a search bar, have an archive, and have categories.

    • They are definitely useful to have, though such a pain to make ha
      x Lauren

  • I totally agree with most of these accept the media kit! I’ve been blogging two years and worked with some really decent brands and never once been asked for a media kit x

    • I’ve not been asked for it loads, but I have been asked a few times. I’ve also found that it’s useful to have now that I’m trying to make the first move with contacting brands and companies! Thanks for reading Kayleigh πŸ™‚

  • Another really helpful post! I’m doing some “blog admin” at the weekend so I’ll be updating my about me and I think I’m going to start making a media kit too ^_^

    • Good luck with it Jessica! It takes a while to make but they are useful to have πŸ™‚ I need to set aside a blog admin weekend soon, so much to update!
      x Lauren

  • Totally agree with the search bar! Drives me nuts too!! I’m sure I have one on mine but not sure how many people use it πŸ˜‚
I don’t think I’ll ever be lucky enough to work with brands etc but these are great tips! Xxxxxxx

    • I went on a blog the other week trying to find a specific post and I couldn’t find it because they had no search option. So annoying.
And I’m sure you will Lucy! I never thought I would either and now I’ve worked with some wonderful brands <3
      x Lauren

  • I agree with all the above!

It makes it all so much easier doesn’t it?
I really need to redo my media kit but I haven’t found the time as of yet to do it πŸ™ but they’re really handy to have!

  • Confetti & Cashmere

A media kit is amazing and was so good when I needed it from bloggers for my t-shirt business. I realised I should make one myself and definitely update my about me page. xx

    • They are so useful to have aren’t they? I was contacted by so many companies asking for my media kit over the years but I never had one to give them and I wish I had.
      x Lauren

  • I loved this post, these are definitely all things that bloggers should do! I remember feeling overwhelmed with this kind of thing when I started out but actually they’re the little things that go along way throughout your blogging adventure, especially the media kit!

    Emmie

    • I was the same Emma! I think that’s why I love writing these kind of posts, because I know how much I would have loved to have read them when I first started out. Thanks for reading <3
      x Lauren

  • Fab post. Agree with them all. However, it’s amazing how many people don’t have/do some of them.
I actually only recently made my media kit, but it’s something that I send out to people rather than have directly on my blog.

    Caroline.x
    http://www.carolineelgeywhite.com

    • Yes I just send mine out to people as well, though I think I might add a link to it on my contact me page as well just in case anybody wants to read it πŸ™‚ Thanks for reading Caroline <3

  • I have actually printed this post off as it is something I really need right now. I saw a new blogger the other day and went immediately to her About Me page and realised I need to update mine asap.

    Thanks for sharing
    Steph xx

    • Aww I’m really glad you find it helpful Steph! I love doing these kind of posts <3 I could probably do with giving mine a little update as well
      x Lauren

  • This is an incredibly useful post, Lauren! Especially for those new to the blogosphere, as it’s really easy to forget these things when you first set up your blog! I also find it really frustrating if I can’t search someone’s blog, or if I find a blog I love but I can’t see where to follow the blogger on social media! Thanks for sharing this – I definitely need to check that my About Me page is up to date!

    Abbey 🐬 http://www.abbeylouisarose.co.uk

  • Emma Ramsell

I love this blog! Ive been really worried about a media kit. So having something to come back to is amazing! I love that you’ve linked other blogs too! We need to keep supporting each other x

    • Aww thank-you Emma! Oh I worried about it for ages, and then I took like 6 hours to make one (not even joking), but I’m really glad I have it made now. And I agree- we definitely need to support each other <3

I really like this post – you make some great points. My About Me page is in serious need of an update and I only recently made my PR/Disclaimer page. I have been thinking of making a Media Pack for a while but I’m always worried it will look really unimpressive!

    • I could actually probably do with updating my About Me page as well. If anything I want new pictures on it ha.
      x Lauren

  • Tania Ribeiro

I keep meaning to create a media kit but then I don’t feel like I’ll have much to put on there! Some very good points o definitely agree with the about me page and linking to other social media.

    Tania || http://www.taniaalexandraribeiro.com
    xx

    • Even if you don’t have much to put on you could try setting one up. If anything it means it won’t take you as long to set up and then you can easily just update it as you get more things to put on!
      x Lauren

  • Holly

I definitely agree with all of these, it’s so important to be clear and let everyone find the information they want easily. Really good post Lauren!

  • Tea Party Beauty

YES TO SEARCHABLE, and making it easy to find your email. I hate blogs where it’s easier to find a rare diamond than their email address

    • It should be front and centre on every blog! PR’s and companies won’t waste their time looking, they’ll move on
      x Lauren

  • This is a brilliant post in many ways Lauren! It gives advice to people who are new to the game and also reminds those that have been in the “game” a bit longer how important each and every step is. Especially the email. I think some people forget that no matter how pretty your blog is you need to have your email in an easy accessible spot!! xxxx

    • I’m glad people are finding it useful πŸ™‚ It’s so easy to forget about these things the longer you blog. When I first changed my layout at the start of the year I almost forgot to include a link to my disclaimer page!
      x Lauren

  • ADoseOfChatter

I loved this so much! So many great points, one of the the first things I did before even posting on my blog was getting it set up and adding a disclaimer and about me section cause I knew how vital they are! I definitely need to get a proper media pack together though so thanks for the links!

Lots of love Izzy | http://www.ADoseOfChatter.com

    • They really are so important aren’t they? And no problem, I found those links so helpful, I would have been seriously lost without them
      x Lauren

  • Sian…

Most of this list is on my to-do list for my blog this year! I’ve been meaning to do my about me/contact me/media kit pages for a while but never got round to doing them! I’m definitely using all of these tips to help me through!

    Sian x
    http://www.theenglisheverygirl.com

    • Glad the tips help Sian! It’s so hard to find the time to get around to doing everything isn’t it?
      x Lauren

  • Charlotte

I really need to do my whole discloser again because no doubt mine is very out of date now. I know I also need to do a new media kit because for sure that is so old but it is having time and getting round to doing them

    Charlotte x

    • It can be time consuming to do can’t it? I currently update my media kit once a month to show my current stats but I’m thinking of changing it to showing my stats every three months so I don’t have to update as often
      x Lauren

  • Yes to all of these, especially declaring content! x
