How to style a trench coat

There’s no doubt about it. The trench coat is never going to die. It’s that one classic item that every person should have in their wardrobe. The trench coat is that popular that Jack Wills even has a guide on how to style a trench coat. This guide gives some brilliant points on how to style different trench coats. It even gives a really great history on the trench- did you know that during WW1 the coat shielded officers from the mud in the trenches, hence providing it with its name? I know I didn’t!

So today I thought it would be fun to use the pointers provided by the guide to put together a few outfits! There are three style of trench coats that Jack Wills offers: Duncombe, Dollyhill and Hathershaw. And I’m going to style an outfit around each coat:

The Duncombe Trench

The Duncombe is Jack Wills classic trench coat. Because of how classic it is I decided to keep the outfit very simple and classic. I feel like these black Fernham High Waisted Jeans and a simple Castley Embroidered Top would be a perfect outfit for this coat. Of course, the brilliance of this trench coat is that is can go with most outfits. A dress, a suit… pretty much anything.

The Dollyhill Swing Trench

The Dollyhill is definitely the girliest option of the trench coats, with it being a combination of the classic trench and the swing coat. Because of this I decided to continue on with the girliness of this style, and pair it with dresses. The Woolscott Broderie Shirt Dress and the Speistbury Lace Trim Dress would both look perfect with this coat, especially the pink option.

The Hathershaw Crop Trench

The Hathershaw is the perfect option for those who don’t like a long coat. It has all of the elements of the classic, just without the length. Being a cropped coat definitely gives it a more casual feel so thats what I went with when I styled this outfit. The Henlow Slim Leg Jeans and the Tunley Striped Tank would make a perfectly ‘just thrown together’ outfit.

The perfect thing about a trench coat is that they can be dressed up or down. They really are one of the most versatile and stylish pieces of clothing you can have in you wardrobe. So make sure you shop the women’s trench coats this summer!

  • Oh I wish I had enough money to have a wardrobe comprised entirely of Jack Wills clothing! I have one of their tweed blazers which I absolutely love and want to wear every day haha! I think you’ve picked out the perfect accompaniments for the trench coats, the Duncombe trench is definitely the one I’d pick!

  • Sian…

I need a new trench coat! I’ve got a shorter one that I bought from George at Asda a couple of years ago and I love it! I really want a longer one but being 5″2 is a struggle when buying coats! I love Jack Wills clothing though, I just wish I could afford it!

I’ve never actually owned a trench coat but feel like I have literally wanted one forever. Maybe now’s the time to great myself especially as they seem so versatile.

I really like the pink one – I’m a total girly girl so that suits me brilliantly. Although to be fair they’re all really nice and I wouldn’t turn any of them down!
