Turn the Internet off and relax

These days almost everything we do involves the internet in some way. Want to watch a tv show? We no longer turn the tv on, we use Netflix. Want to order food? We don’t go to the takeaway, we just something like Just Eat to order. Want to talk to our friends? We don’t phone them, we whatsapp them. You can see where I’m going with this. So lately I’ve been trying to make an effort to do at least one relaxing activity a day that doesn’t involve the internet. And I have to say, I feel like it’s really helped me emotionally and mentally.

Reading

Recently I’ve been trying to make an effort to read for at least half an hour a day. In particular I try to do this right before bed as I find it really helps to switch my mind off before I go to sleep.

Go for a walk

I’m such a lazy person, that actually getting myself up and out for a walk can be a difficulty. But once I’m outside, I’m always so glad I’ve done it! I have a dog so I try and walk her everyday, but I’m not going to lie- the minute the rains on, I try and pass the dog walks onto somebody else. But not we are getting into the better weather and the longer days, I’m definitely trying to get out and about more!

Visit a museum

This isn’t actually the easiest activity for me to do, because there aren’t that many museums close to me. But when I am in a city I always try and visit a museum! Museums are great ways to learn new things and expand your mind. And best of all, quite a few museums are actually free, so you can save yourself some money as well!

Go to a beauty salon

Who doesn’t love a pamper? I know I certainly do. I try and visit a beauty salon once a month for some form of pamper. The cheapest option is normally a manicure- you can go for a mini-manicure or a full manicure depending on what you want. I personally love a full manicure as it involves an arm and hand massage. Every now and then I like to treat myself to a full body massage. 1 hour of total relaxation. Perfection. And if you can’t afford to go out for some pampering, then recreate it at home! Play some chilled out music, light a few candles, turn off your phones, and give yourself a facial or manicure (or even better… both). Play a board game

I know that when you mention board games a lot of peoples minds instantly jump to the likes of Monopoly. But there’s actually a lot of fun board games you can play with your friends! And there’s quite a few board game cafes opening up across cities as well, so you can play fun games, eat food, and have a laugh with your friends! My boyfriend and I enjoy playing games such as Munchkin and Castle Panic- give them a try, I promise they are fun!

Take a bath

I don’t know how people can’t enjoy baths. They are just so perfectly relaxing. Fill up your bath with hot water, chuck in a Lush bath bomb, light yourself a few candles and grab a book. Then you’re set for the next hour or two. You can even grab yourself a glass of wine if you really want to go all out.

So there you have it. Some fun and relaxing activities you can do that don’t involve the internet!

    I always read before bed, I find it really stops my brain from racing as I just concentrate on the story.
    We can all do with less phone time although they seem to be an integral part of our lives now.

  • I’m such a big fan of board games and card games too! My BF taught me how to play poker which is a lot of fun, even when it’s just the two of us playing for copper coins haha! Visiting a Museum is also fab, such an enriching experience, giving you the chance to learn something new! Fab ideas here, Lauren!

    This is such a good post. I regularly combine bathing and reading for the ultimate in relaxation. My husband and I are going to have one night where we put the phones and laptops down and switch off the telly and spend some quality time together. We can spend so much time engrossed in our screens.

    Hey Lauren, I’ve taken many social media breaks as they are just needed, but doing at least one consciously thing away from a screen is such a good habit to get into. I read an article yesterday thag sulports your idea. We as young peopl believe we have no time, but we do its just that all are activities lack variation ie. most are spent in front of a screen and on the internet. Nice post x

    I miss living at my mums for the sole reason of having a bath. Showers are great an all, but they’re no where near as relaxing as a hot bubble bath and reading a book

  • These are all wonderful suggestions. I’m making a promise to myself to read for at least 30 minutes before bed tonight (I’m slowly working my way through American Gods). And maybe the weather will be nice enough to walk the dogs, too. They could use it, even if its just a block.
