Exploring my Local Area: Ballydougan Pottery

Last Monday the sun was shining, I was off work an it was the day after my mums birthday. So I decided that I was going to make the most of the day and treat my mum to a birthday lunch. After realising that my initial lunch destination is closed on Mondays, I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to try somewhere new. So we jumped in the car and headed to Ballydougan Pottery.

Ballydougan Pottery is found at Bloomvale House, a gorgeous grade 11 listed thatched house. As well as the restaurant, there is a giftshop, pottery workshop and cottages that can be rented out. Despite hearing many great things about the food, and driving past signs for it contantly, neither me or my mum had ever actually been. So we where both pretty excited to try it.

Ballydougan Pottery restaurant offers a breakfast menu, lunch menu and an afternoon tea. We chose from the lunch menu, and I went for the chicken bake, while my mum went for the soup of the day and a sandwich. On that particular day the soup was sweet potato and roast peppers. I tried a bit and I have to say- absolutely gorgeous. My chicken bake was also extremely good, and I think I could have had seconds! We then decided to treat ourselves to a little dessert: I went for apple tart with custard (my favourite) and my mum went for Raspberry Frangipane which again was gorgeous.

After our lunch (which we had ate outside to take advantage of the gorgeous weather), we took a little look around the gift shop. Full of gorgeous gifts, pieces of pottery from the workshop, jewellery and more, there is something for everyone. I saw quite a few gifts that will make a perfect fathers day present, so I’ll definitely be popping back over in a few weeks.

As I’ve already mentioned, there is also a pottery workshop on the premises. Some of the pottery can be bought in the gift shop, and it really is gorgeous! In fact, all of the food in the restaurant is served on the hand-made pottery. Ballydougan offer different workshops and tours around the workshop, which is something that a lot of people might find very interesting and fun. You can find a full description of the sessions they offer here.

All in all, Ballydougan was a gorgeous spot! The food was amazing, the location gorgeous, and all of the staff where very friendly. I definitely want to go back again to try out the afternoon tea. Maybe I’ll treat my mum again soon. I’m just going to leave this post now with a few pictures I took, hope you enjoy them!

  • It sounds like you had a lovely time! I love stumbling across new places for lunch – my Mum came to visit me in London for her birthday last year and I took her for lunch in Chelsea. We stumbled upon a little cafe I’d never seen before and it was just perfect! XO

  • Gorgeous photos as always, Lauren! This place looks adorable! Little independent potteries are always such fun to visit because you never know what you’re going to find! There are two similar places to this in Suffolk, where I’m from, and I always take my friends who come to visit there! The food looks incredible, especially those tarts! Mmmm!

  • Wonderful photos! This looks like a lovely little place and your mum looks like she had a great time with you – I need to spend some time discovering local spots too, we often think about what we want to see ‘out there’, whilst we are missing so much right next to our doorsteps.
